On Land: The standing "army" of Telorthen Ty Taros is principally an infantry force supported by light chariot units and a small amount of light and medium cavalry. The cavalry is a relatively recent innovation which has come about following the importation of stronger horses from the kingdom of Pathe and the establishment of breeding lines to produce stronger horses. The chariotry is considered the elite force. There is also a small artillery branch specialising in the construction and use of catapults and seige equipment.

Infantry Organisation: The smallest unit of infantry is a file and consists of ten soldiers, nine file members and one file leader.

Five files make up a company, the senior file leader commanding the company as company commander. Some companies have added a seperate company commander and the senior file leader then becomes his executive officer.

Two to five companies gathered together under a single command form a battle. A battle is a flexible unit and can be made up of differing types of troop according to need and availability. A battle is considered to be a strategic formation, whereas the company and file are considered tactical formations.

Formations above battle are beginning to be put together in Telorthen Ty Taros in response to the recent troubles in Maladon and occassional provocations from Nuril Ka.

Infantry Types: The infantry of Telorthen Ty Taros consists of light archers and medium and heavy infantry types.

The light infantry consists of unarmoured troops typically armed with a shortbow and a quiver containing twenty arrows. For close in protection they carry a mix of handaxes and shortswords.

The medium infantry, which makes up the bulk of the infantry, wears armour consisting of a leather jerkin, leather arm and leg greaves and a leather helm. They also carry a shield for additional protection. They are armed with spears and broadswords, which are supplemented by the ubiquotous handaxes which these troops tend to use as missiles.

The heavy infantry wears armour consisting of a rigid leather (or in some units bronze) breastplate, with iron arm and leg greaves and a reinforced leather helm. They also carry a large shield for additional protection. Weaponry is the same as that of the medium infantry.

Cavalry Organisation: Cavalry is organised similarly to the infantry. Ten troopers, consisting of one troop leader and nine men make up a troop.

Five troops make a squadron under a squadron commander and like the infantry some squadrons appoint the senior troop leader as squadron commander and some appoint a seperate individual.

Two to five squadrons make up a regiment under a regimental commander. The regiment is considered a strategic formation while squadrons and troops are classed as tactical units.

The cavalry is proving popular with the less well off nobles and richer commoners alike and is slowly beginning to replace the chariot as a weapon of war. The principle factor hindering the development of cavalry is the extreme shortage of horses capable of carrying the mass of a mounted soldier and the conservatism of the current senior commanders who were trained to view the chariot as the ultimate machine of war.

Cavalry Types: The cavalry of Telorthen Ty Taros consists of light and medium types. The difference is principally one of the equipment of the rider rather than the horse.

The light cavalry, also known as the mounted rangers, consists of unarmoured riders on unarmoured light horses. The riders are armed with javelins or light spears, a shortbow and quiver of twenty arrows and a broadsword.

The medium cavalry consists of riders wearing a leather jerkin, leather arm and leg greaves and a leather helm. A shield is also carried. They are armed with spears, which are either thrown or used to push opponents (the technique of the lance has not yet been developed) and broadswords for close in fighting.

Chariotry: The chariot force of Telorthen Ty Taros is organised identically to the cavalry with the only difference being that each chariot carries a crew of two. So ten chariots, with twenty troopers make a troop. Five troops make a squadron and so forth. The chariot force is considered the elite of the army, though the new cavalry is beginning to push at this.

Chariotry Equipment: The chariots of Telorthen Ty Taros are similar to those of the ancient Egyptians but are of somewhat more rugged construction. They require a two horse team trained to operate together. They carry a crew of two, the driver and a warrior. The two crew are armoured as for the medium infantry. Weaponry carried by the chariot consists of javelins, with a quiver for reloads, a shortbow and a quiver of arrows and broadswords in case of hand to hand fighting. Some crews have been known to hang shields from the chariot and use these if required to fight on foot.

Artillery: Telorthen Ty Taros maintains a small cadre of engineers specialising in the construction and use of catapults and other seige equipment. The crews for such equipment is drawn from the infantry at need and is operated under the supervision of the cadre.

Army Organisation: To give an example of a "typical" army of Telorthen Ty Taros below is the current organisation of the force based in and around the city of Siror Desira in the eastern part of the country. Supplies and re-equipment for the army are the responsibility of the local lords, so equipment quality and availability can vary. This is part of the lords feudal obligation. Additional forces can also be drawn upon which are not part of the standing army. These consist of the various city militia and mercenary forces as well as temple forces raised by the temples of Tilanor and Karinak.

At Sea: Telorthen Ty Taros is not a major naval power, but like the other nations around the Sea of Shareale the nation does maintain a navy. Like the army the navy is a full time force paid for by the taxes raised in the designated ports of the country.

Naval Organisation: Because of the widely varying contributions provided by the ports the naval organisation is more adhoc than the army. Each port has an "admiral" in command of the contingent of the navy based there. Above this is the lord high admiral who commands the fleet.

Currently six port towns and cities contribute to the navy, and the "king" of Telorthen Ty Taros has himself financed three of the new armoured triremes. The six ports are;
Taros Torthen, Arlan Esli, Evraren, Kelestin, Endra Alkura and Vace

The Ships: A number of different types of warship are operated by the navy. These can be broken down into a number of types as follows;

Dispatch Boats - These are about 60 feet long and are similar to the ancient Greek Pentakonter, they are fast and used for reconnaisance and the carrying of messages and intelligence. Currently the navy operates 7 reserve quality and 16 average quality dispatch boats.

Type I Triremes - These are the oldest Triremes in the navy. These vessels are 75 to 80 feet long and have three banks of oars. The rowers are exposed and may wear light armour for protection. These are slowly being replaced in Telorthen Ty Taros service. Currently the navy operates 15 reserve quality and 3 average quality type I triremes.

Type II Triremes - These make up the bulk of the fleet. Somewhat longer than the older Type I Triremes with about 120 rowers. They are also somewhat faster than the type I. The older vessels are ataphracts like the type I but the newer vessels are cataphracts with a frame over the rowers carrying a leather canopy to protect from missiles. Currently the navy operates 5 reserve quality type II ataphract triremes and 40 average quality type II cataphract triremes.

Type III Triremes - These are the newest and most powerful warships in the navy. These are of cataphract construction similar to the newer type II. The main improvement from these being an increased hull side to protect the rowers from the side and the upper canopy has been replaced with a full deck. The "king" was so impressed with these that he personally financed the construction of an addition three ships. Currently the navy operates 12 average quality type III cataphract triremes.
