On Land:
The professional standing army of Pathe is largely an infantry force, mostly
made up
of long term recruits. These are supported by contingents of light and heavy
cavalry.
Infantry Organisation:
The organisation of the Infantry follows a typical pattern. The
smallest unit of infantry is a file and consists of ten soldiers, nine
file members and one file leader.
Five files make up a company, the senior file leader commanding the company
as company commander.
Ten companies gathered together under a single command form a battalion.
The Pathe battalion. For heavy infantry the battalion is considered the
smallest deployable unit. Files, Companies and Battalions are all considered to
be tactical formations.
Formations above the battalion level exist on a permanent basis. The smallest
of these is a brigade consisting of two to six battalions, above that are
armies which are mixed formations containing brigades of heavy infantry and
supporting units of lighter infantry and the cavalry units.
Infantry Types:
The infantry of Pathe consists principally of light and medium archers and
medium and
heavy infantry types.
The light and medium archers consist of unarmoured or lightly armoured troops
typically armed with a
shortbow and a quiver containing twenty arrows. For close in protection they
carry a mix of daggers and shortswords. Most of these troops are raised from
levies when needed but a number of professional units also exist.
The medium infantry, wears armour
consisting of a leather jerkin, leather arm and leg greaves and a leather helm.
They also carry a shield for additional protection. They are armed with spears
and shortswords, which are supplemented by daggers. Their purpose is to harass
and soften up opponants prior to the arrival of the heavy infantry.
The heavy infantry wears armour consisting of a rigid leather (or in some units
bronze) breastplate, with iron arm and leg greaves and a reinforced
leather
helm. They also carry a large shield for additional protection. Weaponry is the
same as that of the medium infantry except that they are equipped with long
spears/pikes and maneuver as a phalanx.
Chariotry:
Except for ceremonial occassions the chariot has fallen out of use in
Pathe.
Cavalry:
Pathe maintains two types of cavalry in its full time force. Light and Medium.
These are organised similarly to the light infantry. The smallest tactical
formation is a squadron which consists of two companies. Four such squadrons
make a regiment, and two regiments a brigade. Light cavalry is made up of
unarmoured riders on light/medium horse armed with shortbows and short
spears/javelins. The medium cavalry is similarly equipped but the riders wear
leather armour and carry a longer spear. (This is not used as a lance as the
technique is not known)
Artillery:
Pathe maintains a small cadre of professional engineers specialising in the
construction and use of catapults and other seige equipment. The crews for such
equipment is drawn from the infantry at need and is operated under the
supervision of the cadre. The cadre itself is considered an elite force due to
their seigecraft skills.
At Sea:
Pathe is a moderate naval power and maintains a navy crewed by professionals.
Naval Organisation:
Six ports in Pathe provide harbours for the Pathe navy, these are Dolmask,
Selde, Galreyn, Janakor,Jenalpor and Jhen Ka
The Ships:
A number of different types of warship are operated by the navy, these can be
broken down into a number of types as follows;
Dispatch Boats
- These are about 60 feet long and are similar to the ancient
Greek Pentakonter, they are fast and used for reconnaisance and the carrying of
messages and intelligence. Currently the navy operates 7 reserve quality and
18 average quality dispatch boats.
Type V Triremes
- These make up the bulk of Pathe's navy. They are all of Cataphract type
consturction and are between 100 and 120 feet in length. The vessels are fully
decked and two masted. Pathe operates 16 reserve quality and 38 average quality
type V triremes.
Penteres
- These make up the heavy battleships of the Pathe navy. As is typical of this
type they are slow under oar but carry a lot of sail. Again they are of
cataphract construction and fully decked. They are armed with two bow mounted
light bolt throwers. Pathe operates 7 reserve quality and 9 average quality
penteres.
